Die unglückliche Bruks hat einen Roman geschrieben, dessen Hauptfigur, die Meerjungfrau Viktoria Aal, immerzu glücklich ist. Nach der Absage eines Verlags lässt Bruks ihre unbeschwerte Figur zunächst hinter sich. Dann aber holt das eigene Werk sie unerwartet wieder ein und es kommt zu einer unfreiwilligen Veröffentlichung, in deren Folge sich ein wahrer Hype um das rätselhafte Buch entwickelt.
Während eine stetig wachsende Fangemeinde es als Kultbuch feiert und von "Viktoria Aal" ihre Lebensfragen beantwortet sieht, vermuten andere einen gewieften PR-Coup hinter dem Überraschungserfolg. Bruks muss sich in all dem Trubel nicht nur mit einem aalglatten Verleger, sondern vor allem sich selbst und den eigenen Wünschen auseinandersetzen.
Inmitten einer Meerjungfrauenshow erzählt die Hamburger Zeichnerin Wiebke Bolduan von Autor:innenschaft, Selbstakzeptanz und zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen. Die darin auftauchenden Figuren sind voller Tiefgang und Witz, die berührenden Dialoge werfen nicht zuletzt die Frage auf: Wie kann man sich selbst mit allen Schwächen akzeptieren? Und... Wie bin ich denn?
Unhappy Bruks has written a novel, with a protagonist – the light-hearted mermaid Viktoria Aal – who is without a care in the world, all the time. When the novel is rejected by a publisher Bruks leaves her happy protagonist behind for the time being. But then something completely unexpected happens: Her own work catches up with her, when it is suddenly published without her prior knowledge and consent, causing a vast hype around the mysterious book.
Whilst a steadily-growing number of fans hypes the book as a cult novel, finding their questions about the meaning of life answered by “Viktoria Aal”, others suspect a clever PR-coup behind the sensational surprise hit. During this conundrum, Bruks must deal with a slick publishing agent - but mainly with her troubled self, defining and re-defining her very personal wishes and goals.
Right from the centre of a mermaid show, Wiebke Bolduan draws a story about authorship, about self-acceptance and interpersonal relationships. Her protagonists are characterized by thoughtfulness and depth as well as a wry sense of humour. The touching dialogues raise the question: How can people accept themselves, with all their faults and weaknesses? And… “Who am I, really?”
